Lying just outside the path of totality for the 2023 solar eclipse, Onslow and surrounding coastal areas in the Shire of Ashburton will experience a deep partial eclipse of over 99% of the sun covered on Thursday 20 April this year.
Shire President Kerry White said that Council is looking forward to welcoming tourists to the region and taking part in the festivities.
“The Eclipse has brought a number of opportunities to the Ashburton region, including this week of celebration,” she said.
“The day of the Eclipse we will host a Street Party on the Foreshore, commencing at 10am until 10pm that day with plenty of opportunities to view the phenomenon occur as well as market stalls and fun family-friendly activities.
““Later that evening The Waifs, Australia’s most successful independent Aria winning folk band, will headline a free concert, supported through the day by Corey Colum, Michael Ward, Jetpack Trio, Jimmy Cutz and a live DJ.
“A fireworks display, sponsored by MV Marine and Diving, will also light up the night over beautiful Beadon Bay.
“We have been working closely with the State Government, local businesses, and stakeholders to ensure we are prepared to host the expected influx of visitors to Onslow.
“I encourage those travelling to Onslow for the Eclipse to take the time to explore the beauty of our Shire, including our other towns of Paraburdoo, Pannawonica and Tom Price, Karijini and Millstream Chichester National Park, and the Mackerel Islands.”
The Shire of Ashburton’s Eclipse Festival of Events runs from Saturday 15 April until Saturday 22 April.
Events include a movie night, pool party with live music and food trucks at the Onslow Aquatic Centre, Eclipse viewing, a family fun day at the Onslow Multipurpose Centre (MPC), Onslow Street Party on the Foreshore and dark sky viewing, concluding with a free concert on Saturday 22 April.
