Camping in Caravans on Residential and Private Property

Living in a remote town it is common for residents to host visiting family and friends in caravans or campers on residential properties. In most cases, this does not present an issue provided legislative requirements are met.

Under the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997, a person may camp on private property for up to 5 (five) days within any 28-day period without approval.

The following conditions apply:

  • Only one caravan or camper may be used for camping on the property at any one time
  • Camping must not create a hazard or nuisance
  • Caravans or campers:
    • Must be located off the road and not obstruct traffic
    • Must not unreasonably impact neighbouring properties
    • Must have power safely connected so as not to pose a hazard
    • May be used for short term camping (up to 5 days) without approval

Approval for Longer Stays (more than 5 days)

If a person intends to stay in a caravan or camper on private property for more than 5 days within any 28-day period, approval is required from the Shire.

This applies to:

  • Visitors staying with family or friends on residential properties
  • Temporary accommodation during construction of a dwelling
  • Use of caravans or campers on vacant land

An application must be submitted to [email protected] and approved prior to the extended stay. Conditions may be imposed, including requirements for waste disposal, site management, and amenity.
