Impounded Animals

Under State Government Legislation, animals can be seized and impounded for many reasons; the main one being for wandering at large. Ashburton Rangers may impound dogs and cats for their safety and wellbeing as well as to ensure the safety of the community.

If your dog or cat is impounded, you will have to pay a fee to recover it as well as the cost of caring for your animal. These fees must be paid prior to the animal being released. If your dog or cat is also not microchipped and/or registered, it cannot be released until both requirements are satisfied.

Rangers make all reasonable attempts to locate animal owners or rehome unclaimed animals, so it is highly recommended that you phone the Shire as soon as you realise your animal is missing.

Current Impounded Animals

If your animal does not appear on one of the attached documents then please contact the Shire on 9188 4444, as well as to report your dog or cat as missing.

Note: Unowned cats are held for a minimum of 3 working days. Ranger Services will make reasonable attempts to identify the owner.
