Outstanding contributions to the community in the areas of health, sport, fundraising and voluntary services were among those recognised at this year’s Australia Day WA Citizen of the Year Awards.

Each year these awards provide the opportunity to reward and acknowledge members of the community who contribute and engage in the local community.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said that the Citizen of the Year Awards honour those individuals and groups that enhance our community.

“The Citizen of the Year Awards are a reminder of what it takes to make a community”, said Councilor White.

“Enhancing the livability of our community, demonstrating leadership, inspiring others and showcasing a notable contribution and commitment to community life are among the qualities that are considered for nominees and winners.

“Most of us will agree that it is individuals and organisations that demonstrate these characteristics, make living in remote areas a more positive and inclusive experience for everyone.

“It is a privilege to present these awards to those inspiring members the Ashburton community on Australia Day as we celebrate all the things we love about Australia and acknowledge the contribution that every Australian makes to our vibrant nation.

“Congratulations and well done to all nominees and winners”.

The Citizen of the Year Awards were just one of the community focused events held across the Shire on Australia Day.

Celebrations included Aussie breakfasts and barbeques, thong-throwing, lamington eating and best dressed competitions, cardboard regatta and pool activities, live music and family entertainment.

Thanks to our community partners Rio Tinto and the Chevron-operated Wheatstone project for their continued support in making Ashburton a vibrant and robust place to life.
