Visitors to our region can now remain connected following recent extension and upgrades to the Shire of Ashburton Welcome Wi-Fi hotspots.
The Ashburton network consists of a number of Welcome Rest Stops and public centres that ensure visitors, tourists and local remain connected and can keep in touch and share their travel adventures.
Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she was pleased the network upgrade was completed in time to capture the late start to the tourist season in the North West following travel restrictions due to COVID-19.
“Being able to log in and remain connected is part of the travel experience tourists expect – whether it be to post photos of their travels, keep in touch with family and even check into the office and work while on the road”, said Councillor White.
“Our towns of Tom Price and Paraburdoo offer central Wi-Fi locations while visitors to Old Onslow can tap into the Welcome network and follow a virtual tour through the Everythere app that was also initiated this year
“Several rest stops along the way include the Onslow turn-off on North West Coastal Highway, Robe River, Karijini Drive, and Hamersley Gorge.
“Last year over 17,000 Wi-Fi sessions were logged at our WiFi Spots, with Tom Price Library the most popular location with 10,000 sessions there alone.
“The average session time is 22 minutes with usage of roughly 40mb of download and 12mb of uploaded internet traffic, showing the demand and popularity of this service.
“The Shire’s IT team working with contractors TSG completed the $60,000 works that included maintenance to hardware and continued internet and software support and coverage”.
