The Shire of Ashburton has been awarded the Environmental Leadership and Sustainability Award at this year’s LG Professionals WA State Conference for the Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility.

The Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility, just 40km from Onslow, is the new regional waste management facility for Australia's North West.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she is excited the $13 million dollar Class 4 facility and project has been recognised at state level.

“This award recognises dedication to sustainability through corporate process improvements or initiatives that yield significant real or potential environmental benefits”, said Councillor White.

“Our 100% off-grid, solar powered waste facility will accept waste from mining, industrial and oil and gas operations across north west Australia.

“This design has been carefully thought out to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape and to also comply with strict environmental protection requirements.

“The Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility has been designed and constructed to best practice standards and has been constructed to service the Resource Sector globally, taking waste locally and nationally in addition to waste freighted from the northern hemisphere and hydrocarbons like plastic, trawled from the oceans.

“The facility is fully integrated, and consists of a Green Waste facility, Construction and Demolition Waste Facility, Liquid Waste Facility, Tyre Mono-cell and Class 4 landfill accepting low level hazardous waste materials.

“We also have just been awarded our license to operate from Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and earlier this year awarded the contract for the operation and management of the Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility to Pilbara Environmental Services Pty Ltd.

“The facility will be accepting waste from early 2022.”

The Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($9 million), Chevron and Western Australian Government ($2 million) and Shire of Ashburton ($2 million).

The Shire, Chevron and the Western Australian Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation are the Key Project Partners in the delivery of the project.
