The Shire of Ashburton welcomed Hon Roger Cook, Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Jobs and Trade; Tourism; Commerce; and Science to Onslow this week.

The visit enabled the Shire to showcase several planned developments that will enhance Onslow’s Visitor Economy.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she was pleased Mr Cook was including Onslow on his itinerary to the Northwest.

“We believe the visitor economy is crucial for the long-term sustainability and liveability of Onslow and the Shire of Ashburton”, acknowledged Cr White.

“Earlier this year we published a paper that outlined how the visitor economy of the community strengthens resource investment by delivering long term liveable communities and community wellbeing.

“Several projects have been highlighted as critical in achieving this vision including Onslow Foreshore Revitalisation and Promenade Masterplan, the next stages in Onslow’s Community Boating Precinct, developing the Pilbara Inshore Islands Tourism Initiative and expansion of Onslow Airport operations.

“We also showcased the Shire’s plans for next years total solar eclipse in the region, which Onslow will offer over 99% totality of the Eclipse and Thevenard and Serrurier Island off the coast are 100% in the path of totality.

“We are expecting 3,000 people to Onslow for the event, with 95% of available accommodation already booked.

“We are extremely pleased with today’s announcement of $275,000 towards stage 3 of Ocean View Caravan Park, which will enable the Shire to deliver additional overflow sites in time for the 2023 Eclipse in April.

“Stage 3 will offer an additional 100 sites that boast unparalleled views over the Indian Ocean and is a vital component in our tourism offering for the eclipse next year and future tourism development in Onslow.

“We will continue to advocate for support and funding to achieve Council’s vision for the 2023 Solar Eclipse and positioning Onslow as a destination to view the phenomenon, including our Eclipse Festival of Events, Onslow Coastal Moorings and assistance in securing essential services including power and water to deliver Ocean View Caravan Park Stage 3 and expansion of ANZAC Memorial Parklands”.
