Community recreation, tourism and housing are some of the key highlights of the Shire of Ashburton’s 2016/2017 budget, which was approved at the special meeting of Council on 28 July.
Shire President Kerry White says that this year has been another challenging budget amid difficult economic conditions and continuing fluctuations in land valuations. Despite this, it is exciting to report that a number of projects that Council have been working on for several years have finally come to fruition.
“The most prominent of these new developments is the Paraburdoo Community Recreation Hub, which will provide much needed community infrastructure in Paraburdoo. This $14.4m project has received much welcomed funding support from Rio Tinto Iron Ore ($6m) and Royalties for Regions ($5m), and the process for its construction can now commence,” said Cr White.
The Capital Works program totalling $48.9 million includes the following key projects:
- Paraburdoo Community Recreation Hub
- Completion Onslow Administration Complex
- Completion Onslow Swimming Pool
- Onslow Skate Park
- Completion of closure on Onslow refuse site
- Upgrade Ian Blair Memorial Boardwalk, Onslow
- Upgrade to Visitor Information Bay signage (whole Shire)
- Pontoon repairs Onslow
- Refurbish Onslow bowling rink and shade structures
- Staff housing (including refurbishment)
- Aged housing
Roadworks
- Roebourne Wittenoom Road
- Unsealed road resheeting
- Upgrade Stadium Road Tom Price
Drainage
- Onslow renewals
- Tom Price renewals
- Onslow Shanks Road
- Paraburdoo renewals
Over the coming 12 months there are a number of large projects which will commence, and a number of new facilities to open, all of which will continue to improve the community and economic lifestyles within our Shire.
