The Shire of Ashburton has made the decision to cancel all community events that are scheduled in the coming weeks.
Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said that in line with the federal government response to ban on all non-essential public gatherings of more than 500 people, the Shire needed to act in the best interest of public safety.
“We have been closely monitoring the evolving Coronavirus situation and will continue to provide advice and updates to our community as circumstances surrounding the outbreak of Coronavirus progresses” said Councillor White.
“All Shire events scheduled from 16 March until 16 April are postponed or cancelled until further notice.
“This includes Festival of Sports in Paraburdoo and Tom Price, Community Picnic in Pannawonica, Harmony Day in Onslow as well as our school holiday program in all towns.
“Our libraries will not be running their regular weekly programs such as Rhyme Time, Story Time and Craft sessions.
“RSL WA have also advised this morning that ANZAC Day commemorations are also cancelled across the state.
“Community members are advised to stay tuned to the Shire’s Facebook and website for updates.
“We will be reviewing those events scheduled to take place in the coming months as advice and guidance regarding curtailing the outbreak of Coronavirus evolves.
We are also working with our community partners, Rio Tinto and the Chevron-operated Wheatstone project, along with local community organisations to ensure consistent messaging to all members of the community.
“I also encourage all of our community to pay heed to the advice from the Department of Health and practice social distancing, do not shake hands, ensure you regularly wash your hands and if you feel unwell, stay at home.
“If you have been overseas, consider the requirement to self-isolate and the possibility that tighter restrictions on movement and travel may follow in the coming days and weeks.
“As a local government, we are following ongoing concerns surrounding Coronavirus and are considering its impact on our community. We are taking all necessary measures to protect our community and to ensure we do what we can to lessen the impact of the virus on our region”.
