Potential for severe weather along Pilbara Coast

Community members are advised there is a severe weather warning in place as a deep low-pressure system travels towards the Western Australia coast this weekend.

It is anticipated that wind gusts of 100 kilometres per hour are expected to hit the WA coast on Sunday, with potential for 130 km winds close to where low-pressure system crosses land.

Between 20 to 40ml of total rainfall is predicted in the Pilbara's coastal areas, isolated rain falls from Karratha to Kalbarri, including Onslow, could see up to 100ml of rain.

Low lying coastal areas should prepare for potential flooding and people are advised not to go into the water for water sports or boating, with swells of 8 metres expected.

This is a rare event for this time of year and we will provide updates should the forecast worsen for our area.

Community members may be asked to prepare their homes and properties should the system tracking map change course. This includes:

  • Trim branches and treetops around your home
  • Remove or secure loose items around your home, including trampolines
  • Fix shutters or metal screens to all your glass windows and doors
  • Know how to switch off the electricity, gas and water
