New State Fishing Restrictions – What You Need to Know 🎣

Today, the Western Australian Government has announced new State-wide recreational and commercial fishing restrictions, introduced in response to declining fish stocks and the need to protect long-term sustainability. While these changes are not administered or enforced by the Shire of Ashburton, the new rules may impact local fishers, visitors and businesses across our region.

Under the new arrangements, strict seasonal closures and species-specific catch bans will apply in various locations across Western Australia, taking effect from 1 January 2026 for the Pilbara bioregion.

We encourage all community members and visitors who take part in recreational fishing, or who operate commercial marine services, to familiarise themselves with the new rules before heading out on the water.

Staying informed will help ensure everyone remains compliant while supporting the long-term health of WA’s marine environments.
