The Shire of Ashburton will host a variety of community events over the coming weeks in celebration of NAIDOC Week 2020.
The observance, which serves to honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, provides the opportunity for all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
The theme for this year’s event, held between 8 November and 15 November, is “Always Was, Always Will Be” and recognises the spiritual and cultural connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have to our country.
Shire President Kerry White said she was heartened to see Shire of Ashburton communities embrace the event.
“NAIDOC Week remains an important occasion in our events calendar,” said Councillor White.
“The Pilbara region is home to some of the oldest human civilisations on Earth, and we strive to recognise and celebrate the remarkable cultural origins of our ancient and unique area.
“Due to COVID-19 celebrations planned for the original July dates were postponed across the country, in a measure to protect elders and those in our communities with chronic health issues from the virus.
“While we acknowledged the dates in July, it is wonderful that we are able to gather as a community to celebrate and acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
The line-up of scheduled events includes an evening of live music and a film screening in Pannawonica, kids’ basketball in Paraburdoo, a cook-up, corroboree and art display in Onslow, and cultural displays in Tom Price.
