Shire of Ashburton community members are warmly encouraged to celebrate Australia Day by participating in a variety of family-friendly events across our district on Tuesday 26 January.

Paraburdoo residents are welcome to hop into their bathers and head to Quentin Broad Swimming pool to enjoy the spectacle of what will no doubt be a larrikinism-filled lamington eating competition. The food-related fun continues with a contest to see who can bite the best likeness of our sunburnt country into a biscuit.

Pannawonica Sporting club will be buzzing with national pride from 5pm to 8pm as the venue of the highly-anticipated Bogan Bingo event. Attendees are invited to dress in their best ‘bogan’ attire, with prizes on offer for best-dressed adult, kid and family. A yummy meal will be available for purchase.

Do not miss the world-famous Regatta Race during Onslow's Family Day, held at the pool between 9am and midday. Amateur seamen can recharge with a sausage sizzle and a kip before heading to Onslow Sports Club from 4pm onwards for a complimentary barbeque, live music and games for all ages.

Tom Price revellers can tuck into a complimentary Aussie breakfast while DJ Jack mixes classic Aussie tunes at Vic Hayton Memorial Pool from 9am to 11am. There will be pool games for the whole family and prizes awarded for the best-dressed Aussie.

Shire President Kerry White said she was thrilled to see the brimming schedule of events on offer.

“Australia Day presents a fantastic opportunity to appreciate the enviable lifestyle we enjoy in the Pilbara,” said Councillor White.

“On this day we recognise the wealth of opportunities and freedoms that are available to Australians and celebrate the multicultural diversity of our peoples, which will be acknowledged in various citizenship ceremonies on the day.

“I am proud of our community members for espousing the values for which Australians at large are commended – openness and inclusivity, with a relaxed, up-beat optimism.

“In the Australian spirit of generosity we are pleased to offer all activities free of charge. We warmly thank our community partners Chevron and Rio Tinto for their continued support in hosting the day’s celebrations.”
