A new era of childcare facilities in Tom Price is one step closer with the Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto confirming their funding commitments for the proposed facility.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White acknowledged that the funding from Rio Tinto, in addition to the Shire’s commitment, would allow the next stage of the design and construction phase to commence.

“The 96-space fit for purpose childcare centre will have the provision to provide day care and after school care facilities, significantly increasing support to our local families.” said Cr White.

“The new facility will be a positive feature in attracting more families to live in our Tom Price community and will also greatly assist parents who are looking to re-enter the workforce or take on new career opportunities, which is currently difficult due to limited child minding resources”.

Construction is projected to commence during mid-2020 and is expected to take eight months to complete.

Jamie Robinson, general manager of Rio Tinto’s Tom Price Operations, said Rio Tinto is proud to contribute towards the development of this new state-of-the-art facility.

“Childcare is a critical service for the community here in Tom Price and the development of this new, modern centre will enhance the town’s ability to attract and retain families, while also increasing local job opportunities. It will also provide a fantastic learning environment for children that attend.”

“I would like to acknowledge our partners, the Shire of Ashburton, for their dedication towards this project. This sustainable investment is another great example of what government and industry can achieve together through partnership.”

The new Tom Price childcare centre will be delivered as part of the Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership between the Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto. The partnership aims to improve the liveability of Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica through the delivery of new and upgraded community infrastructure, services, events and programs.
