Onslow Youth Transform Skate Park Through Public Art Project🎨

The Onslow Skate Park and Bike Park precinct has been transformed with a vibrant new mural, created by Onslow Ashburton Youth (AY!) as part of the Shire of Ashburton's July School Holiday Program.

The project was proudly supported by , whose investment in community initiatives is helping create meaningful opportunities for young people across the region. Through this partnership, local youth have had the opportunity to build new skills, express their creativity, and contribute to a lasting piece of public art that reflects the spirit of Onslow.

Delivered in collaboration with renowned mural artist from Blank Walls, the youth-led project saw participants work alongside Jerome to design and paint a large-scale mural within the skate park precinct. Jerome is no stranger to Onslow, having created the town’s iconic water tank murals in 2022. His return brought valuable expertise and inspiration to the project.

Over a series of workshops, AY! participants developed concepts, shared ideas, and collaborated on artwork inspired by the natural environment and unique character of the region. From the initial design phase through to the final brushstrokes, young people played an active role in bringing the mural to life.

The completed artwork features local wildlife, native flora and fauna, and natural landscapes from the Onslow region, creating a colourful celebration of the environment and community that makes the town unique. More than a public artwork, the project was designed to strengthen community pride, foster connection to place, and encourage positive activation of public spaces.

By involving local youth in both the design and delivery of the mural, the project has fostered a strong sense of ownership and pride in the precinct while creating opportunities for collaboration, skill development and creative expression. As important gathering spaces for young people in Onslow, the skate park and bike park now feature an artwork shaped by the people that use and enjoys them, all while enhancing vibrancy and community appeal.

The completed mural now stands as a colourful reflection of Onslow’s community spirit and a testament to what can be achieved when young people are empowered to help shape the places around them.
