We want to provide an important update regarding wild birds in our community and the current national H5 Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) situation.
The good news: There are currently ZERO cases of H5 Bird Flu in the Pilbara, with all confirmed cases in Western Australia have been detected in wild seabirds located thousands of kilometres away in the southern regions of the state.
However, under state-wide advice from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), we are taking proactive precautions.
In our towns, especially Tom Price and Paraburdoo, sick or dying corellas are commonly affected by diseases such as Beak and Feather Disease and Avian Chlamydia. These diseases can display symptoms similar to H5 Bird Flu, making it impossible to tell them apart by sight alone. Importantly, Avian Chlamydia can also be transmitted to humans and may cause serious respiratory illness.
If you see a sick or dead wild bird, follow the "Avoid, Record, Report" approach:
🚫 AVOID
Do not handle, move or collect sick or dead wild birds. Please do not take sick birds to local veterinary clinics. Handling birds may expose you, veterinary staff and pets to disease risks.
📍 RECORD
From a safe distance, note the location, date, approximate number of birds, and, if possible, the species. Take a photo only if it is safe to do so.
