Councillor Tina Mladenovic resigned on November 27, 2023, with immediate effect, leaving a vacancy in the Tom Price Ward. The Shire notified the Western Australian Electoral Commission, indicating that the backfilling provisions were exhausted during the Local Government Ordinary Elections held on October 21, 2023. Consequently, an extraordinary election has been deemed necessary to fill the void.
Given the Electoral Commissioner's past experience in overseeing ordinary elections at the Shire, Council has declared in accordance with section 4.20(4) of the Local Government Act 1995, the Electoral Commissioner to be responsible for the conduct of the extraordinary election and in accordance with section 4.61(2) of the Local Government Act 1995, that the method of conducting the extraordinary election will be a postal election.
The Western Australian Electoral Commission has confirmed its willingness to manage the extraordinary election, setting the date for Friday, March 15, 2024. Enrolments close on 18/01/2024.
