The recognition celebrates the program's education and community engagement efforts delivered throughout Pilbara communities over the past decade. Through partnerships with schools, volunteers and local communities, the NWSFTCP has provided meaningful opportunities for young people to participate in real-world turtle conservation activities and learn more about the unique marine environment of Western Australia's north-west coast.
In the Ashburton region, the program has worked closely with communities in Onslow and at Thevenard Island, providing hands-on turtle monitoring experiences, integrated school learning opportunities and ongoing community engagement activities that inspire environmental stewardship among young people.
The Shire is proud to have supported initiatives that connect local communities with conservation science while helping to protect one of the region's most iconic marine species. The nomination highlights the importance of collaboration between government agencies, educators, volunteers and community members in delivering long-term environmental outcomes.
All category finalists are also eligible for the People's Choice Award, with online voting now open and closing on Monday, 7 September 2026.
