Ashburton COVID-19 funding provides support to 97 organisations

Earlier this year the Shire of Ashburton made available financial support and funding to organisations who were severely financially impacted by the COVID-19 health pandemic and subsequent restrictions that followed in an effort to suppress the spread of the virus.

Shire President Kerry White said that the Shire felt obliged to assist small businesses, community groups and sporting clubs through this period.

“The heart of any community lies in the people who make it just that” said Councillor White.

“Our goal was to keep businesses going, keep people in jobs and reach out to groups and clubs so they could continue to operate into the future for the benefit of the community.

“In April we endorsed $1.5M COVID-19 relief package and opened up submissions for a COVID-19 Small Business and Community Grants Fund.

“The support from this fund included cash to offset fixed costs that were not able to be reduced such as rent, insurance and utilities, and in-kind support such as the waiver of Shire licenses, fees, and rent.

“This was followed by a $1.5M contribution from our long-term Community Infrastructure and Services Partner Rio Tinto. Additionally, our Working Together for Onslow partner Chevron Australia made $1M available to local businesses and residents through the Chevron Onslow Relief Fund.

“The provision of these further funds supported the Shire’s relief efforts to support and provide economic stimulus to small businesses and community organisations who were experiencing hardship and who did not fall under or were eligible for Federal and State government financial support.

“As a result, we are pleased to advise that grants of support have been provided to 61 community groups and 36 small businesses.

“Moving forward with consideration given to the fact that we are able to go about our daily lives in a near normal capacity in Western Australia and our clubs, community groups and local organisations are able to operate in a full capacity, Council have voted to allocate the remainder of these funds towards the maintenance and improvement of essential community infrastructure in accordance with the key areas of the Rio Tinto agreement”.

We are pleased that we have been able to assist the following community groups and local businesses.
