The Shire of Ashburton will host an information session to update the community on the upcoming free desexing campaign for pet owners in Onslow.

Working with Karratha Vet Hospital, the campaign is scheduled to take place from Monday 13 September to Sunday 19 September and will include free-of-charge sterilisation, disease treatment, microchipping, animal welfare checks and more.

The information session on Thursday 22 July will also discuss the prevalence of ehrlichiosis or brown dog tick disease and the signs and symptoms and how you can protect your pet.

The disease was first found in Australia in May last year in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and since this has spread rapidly, present in the Pilbara and in each of the towns in the Shire.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, decreased appetite, lethargy, bleeding and in more severe cases, rapid weight loss, swollen limbs, difficulty breathing and blindness.

Call your vet as soon as your dog gets sick as early treatment provides the best chance of recovery.

Visit www.agric.wa.gov.au/ehrlichiosis for more information, including treatment and advice for owners with dogs in northern WA.
