The Pilbara Regional Biosecurity Group advises residents and travellers in the Pilbara region that an aerial baiting program for wild dog control will be carried out by pastoralists during the month September 2015.
Pastoralists undertake baiting on their leases to protect livestock from wild dog attacks.
To avoid the risk of poisoning, residents and travellers should not take their domestic pets on to pastoral leases or adjacent Crown Land. It is imperative to consult with pastoralists prior to entering their lease.
The poison used is 1080. While this poison is extremely toxic to introduced species, native fauna in Western Australia have a tolerance to 1080 as it occurs naturally in the environment. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for 1080 if poisoning does occur.
The poison baits will remain toxic for several months or until substantial rainfall is received.
