Exmouth Gulf Marine Park Planning Process
Given the Cook Government’s response to the Exmouth Gulf Taskforce Recommendations in the Exmouth Gulf Taskforce Interim Report (2021) and Final Report in 2025, planning for the proposed Exmouth Gulf Marine Park (EGMP) is now underway.
As part of the planning process, it is critical that the Shire of Ashburton, community and business sectors are included and kept informed during this planning process in collaborations with the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).
30% (minimum) of the Exmouth Gulf Marine Park is to be created to form a jointly managed Marine Park between DBCA, DPIRD and Nganhurra Thanardi Garrbu Aboriginal Corporation (NTGAC), with 44% of the Exmouth Gulf existing within the Shire of Ashburton.
The EGMP development timeline includes a blend of collaborative workshop and development process with local government authorities, business and community, development of dedicated sources of public information on digital platforms, as to inform and support the following steps:
- Draft Zoning Scheme (Estimated July 2026) for broader public comment period
- Management Plan (Estimated July 2027) for broader public comment period
- Establishment of the Exmouth Gulf Marine Park (Estimated 2028)
