On Saturday December 3 the Tom Price Fire & Rescue Service, with assistance from the Tom Price Bush Fire Brigade, responded to a grass fire in the vacant land behind Minah Street. Upon arrival the fire was deemed suspicious and reported to the local Police. Crews finished mopping up this fire at 10:30pm only to be recalled to the same area at 2:30am on Sunday morning, despite regular patrols of the area to prevent any re ignition of the fire. This too was deemed suspicious and again reported to the Police.
Arson is a serious offence and carries some significant penalties under the Bush Fires Act and the Criminal Code. In Western Australia, witnesses may also be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000 from one of two arson rewards schemes that have a total reward pool of $50,000, available to members of the community who supply information to police that ultimately leads to the conviction of an offender, for arson-related crimes.
Please remember every deliberately lit fire has the potential to cause damage to either, property, infrastructure and or the environment, not to mention the considerable time volunteers spend away from their home and families in supressing these fires.
