Silent reflection commemorates our ANZACs

As the sun’s first rays spread across the Pilbara landscape thousands of residents gathered to commemorate and honour the ANZACs.

Marking 100 years since the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, dawn services gave a poignant tribute to the sacrifices made throughout the last century.

Shire President Kerry White was proud to see so many residents attend the dawn services.  “It is tremendous to see the community join together each year and honour those who have bravely given so much,” said Cr White.

Rio Tinto manager Communities and Agriculture Andrew Turner said ANZAC Day commemorations were important in acknowledging the sacrifices made by current and former members of our defence forces for the people of Australia.

“We are proud to support an event that brings the community together to reflect and remember those gallant men and women who fought for the future and growth of Australia,” Mr Turner said.

In Paraburdoo, Tom Price, Onslow and Pannawonica residents stood in silent reflection as tributes were given during local dawn services. Wreaths were laid by dignitaries, ex-service personnel, military and community members.  Gunfire breakfast’s, parades and a variety of traditional and yesteryear games kept the ANZAC spirit alive throughout the day.

Onslow resident Jake Stratford, a descendant of the first Australian soldier ashore at Gallipoli, paid homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed so much for our Country’s freedom.

Chevron Australia Community Liaison Officer Shawn Heiderich said Chevron was proud to have supported ANZAC day activities in Onslow.

“As an ex-servicemen and a member of the Onslow ANZAC Committee it was fantastic to see the great turn out at the Dawn Service and Gunfire Breakfast. Chevron looks forward to working with the Shire of Ashburton and the Onslow community with other events in 2015 and beyond.”

As well as being a day of reflection and tribute, the various ANZAC day activities held across the Pilbara generously raised thousands of dollars for Legacy.
