The Shire of Ashburton has again committed to a considerable line up of key capital projects as part of its 2021-2022 Budget with $73.2 million allocated to continue infrastructure investment across the region.

At this week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, Councillors approved the substantial budget demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the Shire’s towns and communities.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she was energised with the list of projects included.

“This is the largest budget ever undertaken by the Shire and is necessary to deliver projects of significant community and economic importance, which will provide opportunities to the community for decades to come”, said Councillor White.

“For 2021-2022 we are committing to the delivery of 138 capital works projects to ensure physical infrastructure is in place to enable and facilitate economic growth and attract and retain vibrant and active communities across our towns of Tom Price, Onslow, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica.

“Our economy is not only growing but also providing a diverse range of investment opportunities”.

“To enable us to maintain pace and fast track multiple projects that are of community priority and those underpinning our economic growth, Council has agreed to take advantage of record low interest rates and obtain credit to maintain a balanced budget.

“As part of the 2021/22 budget, Council has adopted a zero increase in the differential rate categories, except for the Pastoral – UV, which reflects an approximate 1.5% increase, and is due to decreased assessment valuations and legislative parameters.

“However, those in the UV – Pastoral rating category will be able to apply a 30% concession to help alleviate the financial impact caused by drought conditions and the impact of COVID-19”.

Key capital work programs include

  • District and Townsite Road Works ($13.1M)
  • Parks & Recreation ($9.6M)
  • Onslow Community Boating Precinct ($7.5M)
  • Onslow Airport Upgrades ($5M)
  • Onslow Airport Subdivision ($5M)
  • Tom Price Undercover Courts ($4.5M)
  • Staff Housing ($3M)
  • Onslow Seawall Extension ($3M)
