‘Shame on Chevron’ over broken promises says Shire President

The Shire of Ashburton Council has expressed its disappointment following the Premier’s decision to allow Chevron to break an agreement regarding plans to no longer house the majority of Chevron’s Wheatstone workers in the Onslow town-site.

Shire President Kerry White said when the agreement was signed, it was agreed that the 350-person FIFO village would eventually be built in the town rather than remain onsite.

“This was in the interests of building a stronger local community and providing opportunities to local businesses,” Cr White said. “It also is better for the FIFO workers’ wellbeing to be part of a community and to integrate with the locals.

Shire President White was also critical at the lack of consultation by the Premier with the Shire.

“We have been left completely in the dark and not consulted at all by the Premier. We are very disappointed at the lack of consultation over the broken agreement. The Premier has shown no respect for local government or our Town Planning Scheme.

“The argument over health and safety doesn’t hold any weight either as these same concerns weren’t raised at the time of signing the agreement several years ago,” Cr White stated.
