Dramatic colours, striking geometry and immense open spaces were the common themes captured by the winners of local photography competition Reef to Range, which ran from August to November of this year.
The popular contest, a joint venture between Tom Price Visitor Centre and the Shire of Ashburton, encouraged photographers to submit their best shots captured within the boundaries of our spectacular region and submit them on social media along with the #reeftorangephotocomp hashtag.
Brimming with remarkable vistas, there was no shortage of inspiration for our participating artists.
Shire President Kerry White acknowledged the competition and its accompanying media campaign as a powerful means of promoting the Shire of Ashburton to a wide audience.
“The Reef to Range photo competition is a fantastic initiative to promote our astounding area,” said Councillor White.
“Sensational coastal scenery in Onslow in the west to the stark, rugged beauty of Karijini and its surrounds in the east comprises the full Reef to Range experience available in the Shire of Ashburton.
“With Christmas holidays right around the corner and the WA border now officially open to interstate travellers, now is the perfect time to show the nation why the Shire of Ashburton is rightfully a tourist hotspot.
“The announcement of winners coincides with a recent tourism campaign, ‘Slip into Onslow’, which highlights our special seaside community as the ideal getaway location with its relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere and some of the best fishing in the state”.
“We warmly welcome visitors to experience all the wonderful things we have on offer in the Shire of Ashburton.”
The winning entries will form a 2021 calendar, with their respective artists sharing a total of $3,600 in prize money. Keep your eyes peeled on the Tom Price Visitor Centre website and the Shire of Ashburton website to learn when the calendar is available for purchase.
Janice Gubbins was the overall winner, with her stunning piece Sunrise Mulla Mullas receiving the most votes by our esteemed team of judges. Fellow prize-winners include:

- Bradley Roberts with Different Perspective, taken at Tiger Eye
- Shawn Heiderich with Old Growth, taken at Old Town Jetty, Onslow
- John Mantei with Passing Stormfront, taken at 178 km Rail Access Line
- Ally Wilson with Oasis in the Outback, taken at Fern Pool, Karijini National Park
- Eleanor Lukale with Mulla Mulla Drive, taken on the journey between Paraburdoo and Nanutarra
- Jevgenia Kolk with Colours of Karijini – Red & Turquoise, taken at Fern Pool, Karijini National Park
- Belinda Heiderich with Behind the Falls, taken at Fern Pool, Karijini National Park
- Teneka Clark with Back Beach, taken at Salt Jetty, Onslow and Ta Ta Lizard, taken at Old Onslow
- John Barnett with Me, Myself & Joffre, taken at Joffre Gorge
- Brendon Brown with Dust Driving, taken at Cheela Plains
