Horizon Power has achieved final commissioning of the new underground power network in Onslow. Civil works have been completed at the Onslow Beach Club, which was the final property to be connected to the underground network.
With the underground network fully energised, Electech WA can begin transferring properties to the new underground system. Electrical connections to properties are scheduled for completion by the end of August.
Once all properties have been transferred to underground power, the overhead power lines will be de-energised and dismantled. This means the streets will be free from ageing power lines by mid-October.
Horizon Power Manager Pilbara Network James Carney said the project relied on community collaboration and support.
“As you would expect from a project of this significance, we have had the people of Onslow involved at every stage,” Mr Carney said.
“On behalf of Horizon Power I would like to thank the Shire of Ashburton, local businesses and residents for their ongoing support as crews worked on their streets with drilling, trenching and cable hauling during the construction phase.”
All street verges and properties will be restored as close to their previous condition as possible and Horizon Power is encouraging residents to check their property and report any outstanding matters to Horizon Power on (08) 9159 7253.
“Residents need to report any verge or property restoration issues by 30 November if they want Horizon Power to inspect and carry out any remediation work,” Mr Carney said.
Dial Before You Dig WA Operations Manager Jodi Aitken said protecting infrastructure assets is crucial for keeping essential services flowing to the community.
“Residents rely on electricity, gas, water and telecommunications for their quality of life,” Ms Aitken said.
“We need to ensure any work activity near any services infrastructure doesn’t result in damage and lead to service interruptions, costly repairs and in the worst-case scenario, injury or death.”

Removal of the old power poles in Onslow is scheduled for completion in November 2017.
