Onslow’s over 55s community group, the Onslow Keepers, celebrated another great year with a guided tour of the Wheatstone Project, Christmas lunch and a performance by local primary school students.

The group was amazed at the noticeable progress on the neighbouring Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project since they last visited the site only 12 months ago, including the newly completed jetty and huge LNG storage tanks. The tour was followed by a delicious Christmas lunch at the Onslow Sports Club, and a performance from Onslow Primary School students, whose participation in the day brought smiles to many faces as stories were told, carols were sung and traditional bon-bon jokes were shared.
Shire President Kerry White said the Onslow Keepers program is an important initiative that supports an age-friendly community in Onslow.
“Engaging the local children encourages integration and the sharing of stories which helps keep the local history of Onslow alive. The Onslow Keepers are a variety of personalities and characters whose long memory and contribution helps sustain the town’s charisma,” said Cr White.
Initially formed in March 2011, the Onslow Keepers are local residents over the age of 55. They are collectively the keepers of some of Onslow’s most valuable oral history. The group meets for morning tea on the first Wednesday of every month and always welcomes new members, visitors and activities.
Onslow Keepers is made possible through the Shire of Ashburton’s ‘Working Together for Onslow’ partnership with the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project. Through supporting community events and key programs, the partnership encourages community involvement and creates a sense of belonging in Onslow.
