The restoration of Old Onslow Cemetery was awarded last week by Master Builders Western Australia.

At a ceremony in Broome last week, the project won the award for Best Historic Restoration or Renovation under $1.5 million.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White acknowledged the achievement and congratulated Hi Constructions and Norman Ioannopoulos, who demonstrated passion and a high level of expertise in the project that was completed in 2019.

“Through our partnership with the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project, $1M was made available for the conservation and tourism development of Old Onslow”, said Councillor White.

“The project on the Old Onslow Cemetery was a secondary piece of work as part of conservation works and management of the old townsite.

“This phase of the project saw the Cemetery, located to the east of the Townsite, appropriately conserved with additional interpretation material provided as well as preserving a number of headstones which are still legible.

“Old Onslow continues to be a tourism drawcard for those travelling North WA, providing an interesting point for residents, relatives and visitors.

“The earliest graves at Old Onslow Cemetery date back to 1897 and was used until the 1920’s when Onslow township was relocated to Beadon.

“Visitors to the region are encouraged to download the Everythere app on their phones to experience an interactive tour of the Old Onslow site. As you explore the site the app recounts fascinating stories, including historical photos and audio from a bygone era”.
