October is Safety Month in the Shire

The Shire of Ashburton’s Safety Month kicked off last week in Tom Price, with skin cancer checks for employees of the Shire followed by a nutritional seminar in Onslow that brought workers together to focus on living healthy lifestyles.

Safety Month will run throughout the month of the October, with the Shire visiting towns in Paraburdoo, Onslow, Pannawonica and Tom Price to promote safety awareness in the workplace.

Shire of Ashburton Human Resources manager Felicia Mudge said people often let safety slip under the radar.

“People tend to get complacent in the workplace and that’s why it is important to bring a focus back onto safety.”

“The shire believes that safety is not just a once off event but an everyday practice.”

With last year’s safety events running for only a week, the Shire has dedicated the month of October to recognising the importance of safety, with plans in the New Year for the Shire to adopt a year-round safety practice. Ms Mudge said this year’s Safety Month focused on nutrition and lifestyle.

“It’s a common misconception for workers to think that personal nutrition is not important for work however the Shire believes it is.”

“ If a worker is lethargic, sick or suffers an injury, they are affecting their team and community. “

“We are simply aiming to educate people to make the right choices when it comes to safety and wellbeing.”

Ms Mudge said putting the right food into your body was like putting the right fuel in your car.
“When you put the wrong fuel in your car, it doesn’t run as well, when you put the right fuel in the journey is smooth….. it’s the same as when you put the right food into your body.”

October’s Safety Month will also see road crews in the Nameless Valley and Milstream camps undertake full health checks. The Shire also plans to re-launch its Occupational Health and Safety Manual for its workers.
