Karijini National Park and Eco Retreat Site Famil🌿
Shire representatives recently attended a site familiarisation at Karijini National Park and the Karijini Eco Retreat, with Shire President Smith, Councillor Rumble, Director Corporate Services Darren Kennedy and Manager Business and Economic Development Susan Allan in attendance, hosted alongside Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) staff to explore recent upgrades and future plans for one of the region’s key tourism drawcards.
The visit highlighted significant improvements across the park, including upgrades to Weano Gorge and Knox Gorge, additional parking, new picnic facilities and toilets, and the sealing of 41 kilometres of access roads to improve accessibility. Planning is also underway for a new $2.5 million Grade 2 hike trail at Weano Gorge, funded through the State Government’s Outdoor and Adventure Tourism Package.
The Shire had the opportunity to tour Karijini Eco Retreat, where recent investments in infrastructure and sustainability were showcased. Upgrades include enhanced eco accommodation, a hybrid solar power system reducing carbon emissions by around 200 tonnes annually, and an advanced wastewater system that recycles 100% of greywater to support the surrounding environment.
With luxury eco tents overlooking Joffre Gorge and continued improvements to park infrastructure, Karijini continues to offer a unique and sustainable outback experience, strengthening its reputation as a premier destination in the Pilbara.
The site visit was a fantastic opportunity for Elected Members and staff to experience firsthand one of Visit Ashburton’s true bucket list destinations and chat through the upgrades which will have long term benefits to Ashburton's visitor market, encouraging visitation to this beautiful part of the State!
