The ability to host both day and night games at Judy Woodvine Oval will soon be reality for Paraburdoo residents as a $600,000 improvement works program gets underway.

Lighting, dug-outs and fencing are among the new features that community members can look forward too at the Paraburdoo located oval in the coming months.

“I am pleased to announce that work has commenced to transform the softball, soccer and rugby facilities at Judy Woodvine Oval”, said Shire President Kerry White.

“Sport and recreation is an integral part of living in remote regions such as ours, providing a social outlet to form friendships, participate in team events and to promote fitness and wellbeing. Providing quality sporting and leisure facilities is essential to creating connected and thriving communities.

“The upgrade to the sporting facility is the next step in completing the Paraburdoo Community Hub, made possible through funding from the Shire of Ashburton, Rio Tinto and the State Government through the Pilbara Development Commission”.

Pilbara Development Commission CEO Terry Hill said the oval upgrades would be welcomed by the Paraburdoo community and further enhance the town’s attractiveness.

“Access to sporting and recreational facilities such as this creates new opportunities and is one of the reasons why communities in the Pilbara are a fantastic place to live and raise children,” Mr Hill said.

At the same time works to create the much anticipated dedicated dog exercise area will get underway next week.

“Following community consultation late last year, the dedicated dog exercise area will incorporate some shaded areas, along with multiple access points, making it easy for members of the community to use”, said Councillor White.

“Working with our community partners Rio Tinto to deliver the dog exercise area, we are pleased that our Paraburdoo residents will be able to take advantage of this space in the coming months”.

Kent Franey, general manager of Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo Operations said “the recently completed Paraburdoo Community Hub has already brought new life into Paraburdoo township through enabling greater opportunities for sports, recreation and social events. The Shire’s transformation of the Judy Woodvine Oval and the soon to be newly developed Dog Park will further support the vibrancy of our local community.

Rio Tinto is proud to hold a long term partnership with the Shire of Ashburton that focuses on making the region a better place to live, work and play through improving the liveability of regional towns like Paraburdoo”.

Community members are advised that while both projects are underway, the public will not have access to Judy Woodvine Oval.

As an interim solution Peter Sutherland Oval will be able to be used, with dogs kept on the leads at all times and oval cannot to be used as a dog exercise area when events are taking place.

Completion date for both projects is expected to be April this year.
