Food safety hot topic as warm weather approaches

With summer upon us Shire of Ashburton residents are reminded to consider health and hygiene when handling food.

Despite three-quarters of people thinking they handle food safely most cases of food poisoning occur at home. Recent rates of foodborne illnesses Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis in WA have been high.

The simplest way to avoid food poisoning is by correctly preparing, cooking and storing food.

Maintain a sanitary cooking environment by always cleaning your hands, benchtops and utensils properly.

Separate raw foods (including meat, chicken, seafood and eggs) from ready-to-eat food.

Consider internal temperatures of food and be mindful of the “danger zone”, which is 5°C to 60°C. This is the range in which potentially harmful bacteria can reproduce rapidly. To avoid the danger zone cook food until it is steaming hot throughout and keep cold foods cold in the fridge or freezer.

‘Play it Food Safe’ and reduce your risk of foodborne illness.
