Issued at 11:03 am WST on Tuesday 26 May 2015 , Western Australia Flood Warning Centre

Flood threat is easing in the Pilbara District Tuesday and Wednesday

Over the 24 hours to 9 am Tuesday recorded rainfall totals over the Pilbara region have generally ranged from 2 mm to 10 mm with higher totals of 31 mm at Newman Airport in the Upper Fortescue River. River rises have been recorded on the Lower Ashburton River, Fortescue River and De Grey River although all river measurement sites have remained below minor flooding levels. Local flooding of roads in the De Grey River catchment were reported on Monday.

The slow moving rain band will continue to bring moderate rainfall over the Pilbara region from Tuesday continuing possibly through Thursday. During this period daily rainfall totals of 0 to 20 mm are expected with isolated falls of 40 mm. The threat of riverine flooding is easing although local flooding is still possible. This would be caused by thunderstorms passing over areas which have received substantial rainfall in recent days, such as the Fortescue and De Grey River catchments.

The Bureau is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if required. DFES advises people and communities to be aware that flooding is possible and be prepared to relocate equipment and livestock. Watch water levels. Travellers need to be aware that road conditions may be adversely affected and travel plans may need to be reconsidered. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and velocity.
