Cyclone Mitchell Update - Saturday 7 February 2026, 12:30pm

A Cyclone Watch and Act is in place for south west of MARDIE to ONSLOW and surrounds, including Thevenard Island.

There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a cyclone is approaching the area.

You need to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone.

The Watch and Act area including Karratha may be upgraded to an Emergency Warning this afternoon. Local areas of intense rainfall leading to severe flash flooding may develop around the central Pilbara coast west of Wickham overnight and Sunday morning. An evacuation centre is open at the Karratha Leisureplex and an evacuation centre will open at the Onslow Multi Purpose Centre from 2pm today.

WHAT TO DO

  • Put your plan into action. If you do not have a plan, make one now on Emergency WA or in the Emergency WA app.
  • If you live in a caravan, older home or a home that has not been maintained, move to your nearest evacuation centre or safer place. Please refer to the Centres section.
  • No matter how many cyclones you have been through, a severe cyclone can be overwhelming. If you plan to shelter at home, make sure you and your family are physically and mentally prepared.
  • If you are unsure, an evacuation centre may be the safer choice.
  • Prepare your property now, including securing loose items like trampolines and outdoor furniture.
  • Make sure your emergency kit is ready with enough canned food and water to last for a week, a first aid kit, medication, cash and a battery-operated AM/FM radio to listen to warnings.
  • Move vehicles under cover.
  • Fasten cyclone shutters, board up exposed windows.
  • Ensure pets and animals are safe.
  • Shops may now be closing.
  • Charge your mobile phone in case power goes out.
  • There may be strong winds and heavy rainfall before the cyclone crosses the coast. Be extremely careful while outside or stay indoors if conditions get worse.
