Bird Health Alert – Corellas and Galahs

An increase in sick and dying corellas has been observed across the Pilbara, including Tom Price, with affected birds showing symptoms such as feather loss, beak deformities, weakness and diarrhoea - signs consistent with Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) or possible poisoning. This is not a new issue; unusual corella deaths have been reported in the region for more than 10 years, often occurring around the start of the wet season and investigated by wildlife authorities.

How you can help:
• Do NOT touch sick or dead birds.
• Report sightings immediately to DBCA (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions).
• Include location, number of birds and observed symptoms in your report.
• Avoid feeding wild birds – it can spread disease more quickly.

The Shire is working closely with DBCA to monitor and manage the situation.

Your reports help protect our local wildlife and keep our community safe.
