The Shire of Ashburton have reached a milestone in the construction of the $13M Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility with the site at practical completion.
The integrated waste management facility will accept a variety of materials for recycling, treatment and disposal from Onslow, and the wider Pilbara Region.
Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she was thrilled that this project was coming to fruition and that soon the Shire would be home to the only Class IV waste facility outside of Perth.
“The Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility has been designed and constructed to best practice standards”, said Councillor White.
“Its design has been carefully thought out to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape and to also comply with strict environmental protection requirements.
“An area spanning 3km long and a maximum of 350m wide consists of a composite lining system consisting of 7 layers to protect groundwater and includes environmental management systems for surface water, leachate and landfill gas.
“The facility also runs completely off-the-grid, with 100% of the energy demand supplied by solar power.
“Located approximately 40kms from Onslow and similar distance from the North West Coastal Highway turnoff, the facility will have capacity to accept green waste, scrap metal, construction and demolition waste, and boasts a liquid waste treatment area, monocells for tyre and asbestos and a Class IV landfill.
“The facility fills a critical gap in waste management infrastructure for the Pilbara Region that will support future growth of existing and potential industries.
“The Shire of Ashburton would also like to acknowledge the significant funding received by the Federal government through the Building Better Regions Fund and financial support from the Chevron operated Wheatstone Project.
“An opening ceremony and event is taking place in early March to acknowledge this project milestone.”
A business proposal is currently being advertised for the Shire of Ashburton to commence a trading undertaking for the Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility and submissions are invited by 6 April 2021. A copy is available on our website.
