Septic Applications

Installation of Holding Tanks, Septic Tanks / Leach Drains and Aerobic Water Treatment Systems that use under the expected daily wastewater volume of 540 Litres / day are subject to the approval of the Shire of Ashburton only and will receive an Approval to Construct or Install an Apparatus for the Treatment of Sewage certificate.

Systems that use over this daily wastewater volume per day are subject to the approval of both the Shire of Ashburton and WA Health Department. The Shire will assess the application and complete a Local Government Report (page 7 of the application) before sending to WA Health Department.  The WA Health Department will issue their own Approval to Construct or Install an Apparatus for the Treatment of Sewage certificate.

For an application to be accepted by the Shire, the following information must be provided:

  • Completed Application to Construct or Install an Apparatus for the Treatment of Sewage (taking special note to include requested details in BOLD RED on the form);
  • Location Plan & Mud Map
  • Site Plan

For Holding Tanks, the above AND:

  • Copy of pump-out agreement inc. frequency of pump out
  • Engineering certification
  • Alarm details

For Septic Tank & Leach Drains, the above AND:

  • Tank size and brand
  • Leach Drain length and brand

For Aerobic Water Treatment System (AWTS), the above AND:

  • AWTS details – brand / capacity
  • Disposal method, fencing and signing details

Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicant. Further information may be required after the initial assessment by an Environmental Health Officer.

Fees

Please complete and sign the credit card details section of the application form but leave the amount blank. Once the application form has been seen by an Environmental Health Officer and fees confirmed you will be contacted before your credit card is charged. If the application needs to go to the Department of Health after it has been assessed by the Shire, $79.00 will be written on the form and charged by the DOH accordingly.

Once the system has been installed, and before use, you must contact an Environmental Health Officer on 9188 4444  to arrange an inspection of the installation. This is required to ensure compliance with relevant by-laws and regulations, following which a Permit to Use will be issued.
