Pet Ownership Responsibilities

The Shire of Ashburton encourages responsible pet ownership and enforces cat and dog ownership guidelines as stated in the Dog Act 1976, Dog Regulations 2013, Dogs Local Law 2012 and the Cat Act 2011. Rangers may impose on-the-spot fines and impound animals for breeches of the Dog and Cat Acts.

Pet owners have specific legal responsibilities, which are intended for the convenience of all the community, as well as the health and wellbeing of your animals.

Exercise Areas

Dogs are permitted to exercise off leash in the following areas:

Onslow

  • Thalanyji Oval, Third Avenue
  • At the foreshore between high and low watermarks (west of First Avenue boat ramp to Four Mile Creek)

Tom Price 

  • Clem Thompson Memorial Oval
  • Tjiluna Oval
  • Minna Oval in Area W, Miluna Place 
  • Tom Price Dog Park, North Road

Paraburdoo

  • Peter Sutherland Oval, corner Fortescue Road and Nickol Avenue
  • Top Oval, corner Fortescue Place and Fortescue Road
  • Grass Reserve, corner Fortescue Road and Ashburton Avenue

 

Dog owners must pay attention to signage and use the bags provided in the dog tidy dispensers.

In the event that the above off leash dog exercise areas are being used by sporting and community groups, consideration needs to be given to ensure your dog is kept under your control during these times. 

Places where dogs are prohibited in the Shire of Ashburton include:

  • A public building (unless permitted by a sign)
  • A theatre or picture gardens
  • All food premises and food transport vehicles
  • A public swimming pool
  • A public toilet block or changing room
  • A cemetery, unless otherwise provided for in the local governments local law relating to cemeteries.

These areas are subject to any written law and any law of the Commonwealth about assistance animals as defined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Commonwealth) section 9(2).
