The Shire of Ashburton is proud to support the Nintirri Centre and the Purple Bench Project, securing a purple bench in the prominent Tom Price Shopping Precinct. The Nintirri Centre was instrumental in bringing the project forward, securing a $300 grant from Linkwest ahead of the Shire of Ashburton’s $3,212.80 contribution.
Launched in 2015, the Purple Bench Project pays homage to the victims of domestic and family violence, with benches painted bright purple in honour of the people affected.
Shire President Audra Smith is proud to support this new addition to Ashburton and raise awareness for an important issue.
“Supporting this project provides a visible reminder of the impact of domestic violence. At a time when family violence and domestic homicides are increasing, particularly affecting women through assaults, it's more important than ever for our community to show that we see the victims, believe them, and are committed to offering the necessary resources to help them safely escape these violent situations.
“In partnership with the Nintirri Centre, the Purple Bench Project aims to convey the Shire of Ashburton is a safe space for all, no matter their identity. Family and domestic violence is a widespread, persistent, and severe violation of human rights, often going unreported due to the stigma and shame surrounding the trauma,” said President Smith.
Fay McInnes, Family Violence Coordinator / Counsellor from the Nintirri Centre, stressed how important these place-based initiatives are to communities like Tom Price.
“The Nintirri Family and Domestic Violence Service is excited to collaborate with the Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto on the Purple Bench Project.
“Known as Barb’s Benches, the stunning aluminium purple bench placed in a prominent position ensures maximum exposure to raise awareness of family and domestic violence.
“Our intention is for the bench to generate conversation, raise awareness, and show people experiencing FDV that we support and acknowledge them.
“The bench provides numbers for people needing help and is a permanent reminder that too many women have become victims of domestic homicide. I believe all Australians and visitors to our community have a responsibility to recognise and respond appropriately to this devastating ongoing issue,” expressed Fay.
Since 2018, the number of purple benches installed by local authorities and Members of Parliament across the state has continued to grow, including in the Shire of Ashburton.
