The Shire of Ashburton will officially open the recently completed multipurpose courts in Tom Price and Paraburdoo next month.

The $12M project began late 2022 and included the installation of shade and roof structures over each facility as well as upgrading the playing surface and installing new clubroom and canteen amenities and electronic scoreboards.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White acknowledged that the revamped facilities would have a huge impact on the community.

“The modern facilities in both towns, increases the capacity for multiple sports groups to benefit from the fit-for-purpose courts and amenities and opens up the opportunity to host competitions and roadshows”, said Councillor White.

“I am thrilled that the Shire of Ashburton has delivered another great facility that positively impacts the community, from a social and health and wellbeing perspective.

“The shaded courts have been initiated by active campaigns from local sports groups who have lobbied to improve sports playing conditions, recognising the harsh climate as a barrier to ongoing and regular playing of sport for all ages.”

“I would also like to acknowledge our funding partner, Rio Tinto, who continue to work with the Shire to create social, active and connected communities in the Pilbara region”.

Rio Tinto’s Managing Director Port, Rail and Core Services, Richard Cohen, said Rio Tinto is committed to being a good local in the communities where it operates.

“The opening of the multipurpose courts is another example of our longstanding partnership with the Shire of Ashburton to deliver a range of projects, services, and events important to the local community.

“We are thrilled to have helped deliver these state-of-the-art facilities to support the health and wellbeing of those living and working in Paraburdoo and Tom Price.

“We know how important sport is in our regions, it brings people together and creates vibrant, thriving communities for families to live, work and play.”

The opening celebrations will take place over two days, with Paraburdoo's event also taking in the opening of the Tennis Courts on Tuesday 6 June and Tom Price on Wednesday 7 June, with official formalities and a basketball and netball carnival each day.

Team registrations to participate are now open for both Fast5 Netball and a 3v3 Basketball round robin style competition via the Shire’s website. Registrations close Sunday 28 May 2023.

Community members are invited to attend the family-friendly event with special guests Alicia Janz and Damian Martin, Dodgy Bros Dodgeball, themed competitions and prizes and entertainment.
