The Shire of Ashburton and Onslow Airport will be taking part in celebrations to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the first ever commercial flight in the southern hemisphere.
The monumental flight in 1921 between Geraldton and Derby was operated by Western Australian Airways and included a stopover in Onslow.
To commemorate this historic milestone, the Sir Norman Brearley Commemorative Flight (named after West Australian Airways founder Sir Norman Brearley) will be re-creating the original journey between September 15-19, 2021.
On Wednesday September 16, 24 planes will descend into Onslow Airport between 2-3:15pm.
The community are encouraged to visit Onslow Airport to welcome the planes as they arrive.
Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White is proud of Onslow’s involvement in this historic event.
“Onslow’s involvement in the first commercial flight in the southern hemisphere is a significant historical achievement for the town,” said Councillor White.
“It’s incredible to see the development of air travel within our region from the first flight in 1921 to our amazing Onslow Airport in 2021.
“All Onslow and Shire of Ashburton residents should be proud of the town’s involvement in such a pivotal piece of Western Australian history.”
