$5 million has been secured through the Preparing Australian Communities – Local Stream program to extend Onslow’s seawall.
Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said she was pleased the Shire was successfully named as one of the recipients of Federal Government’s funding program that aims to reduce the risk and minimise the impact of natural disasters in communities across Australia.
“The funding will be used to protect the Onslow community from the threat of rising sea levels and increasing cyclone activity”, advised Councillor White.
“We have already commenced a 120metre seawall extension in front of the town’s ANZAC Memorial Park area and with this grant we will now be able to extend the Onslow seawall by 720m protecting the townsite to the east.
“This will shield the town and our infrastructure well into the future as well as protecting Onslow Hospital, Bindi Bindi Aboriginal Community, parks, beaches and areas of environmental sensitivity.
“In addition to protecting Onslow’s coastal assets, the seawall will also enable the development of proposed assets that are needed for the economic and social development and resilience of Onslow, while activating future locations for economic, social and tourism opportunities”.
