Roads of recognition: Potential street names approved for ‘Barrarda Estate’ in Onslow

The new residential subdivision in Onslow known as Barrarda Estate will feature a mix of Thalanyji and European street names.

At the October Council meeting, Council endorsed a list of potential street names selected by LandCorp, which now requires formal approval from the Geographic Names Committee.

Shire President Kerry White said that the mixture of European and Thalanyji names was a sign of respect for Onslow’s history. “The names were sourced through consultation with Thalanyji and the Onslow Community Liaison Group,” said Cr White. “The proposed Thalanyji names have a variety of meanings, many being related to local flora and fauna, while the European names proposed are either street names from Old Onslow that have not previously been used in the new Onslow townsite or are the names of former residents.

“The name of the subdivision itself is also quite meaningful to the local area - ‘barrarda’ means ‘nest’ in the Thalanyji language.”

Street names approved by the Shire include Yardi, Scully, Mirri, Garla and Carlyn. “In approving the street names, we also wanted to ensure that our local knowledge is leveraged to select the most appropriate names for the locations within the Onslow area,” added Cr White.

Should all names on the consideration list not be utilised within the new estate, they may be used for other new streets in the future.
