Onslow's TV disruptions

Published on Tuesday, 9 August 2016 at 12:00:00 AM

Over the past few weeks Onslow has experienced major television broadcast disruptions.  The Shire is sorry that the disruption is causing community stress, but the situation is beyond the Shire’s control. The Shire would like to advise that its staff have been working extremely hard in an endeavour to secure a signal.

The following statement has been provided by the Shire’s contractor providing television re-transmission services.

Statement

The regional broadcasters have rearranged their rebroadcasting rights since July. The new arrangements have affected the viewers in Regional WA, Regional Queensland, Southern NSW and ACT, Regional Victoria, Regional SA, as well as viewer’s using the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) system.

As the re-transmission site at Onslow is using the VAST system for program delivery, the broadcast of the television services has been impacted by the new arrangements. Unfortunately the regional broadcasters in WA only finalised their negotiations at the beginning of July and have been making changes over the past few weeks. For example, the broadcasters made a major change at the end of July, which required reprogramming of the transmission equipment. Certain services have been removed from the VAST platform due to the commercial arrangements between the broadcasters, the content providers, and the platform operator. Some teething problems with these changes have been reported.

The Shire of Ashburton has been working very closely with the contractor to address the problems associated with these new arrangements, and will keep the community informed.
