One week until nominations for local government elections open

With nominations for the upcoming local government elections opening in one week, community members are encouraged to start thinking about standing for council.

Local Government Minister John Carey said people from diverse backgrounds, in particular, should talk to family and friends about the possibility of putting their hand up and nominating.

"When it comes to the three tiers of government, local government is closest to the people, which means you can deliver practical changes that have an immediate positive impact on the community," he said.

"I know there are lots of people out there who have great ideas about how to make their communities better places to live, work and do business, and standing for local government is a great way to deliver on those ideas."

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) launched the 'Vocal Local' campaign in August this year, in partnership with the WA Local Government Association, WA Electoral Commission and Local Government Professionals WA.

The campaign encourages people who may not otherwise consider standing for council, to think about the contribution they could make to their local community.

Local government elections take place every two years.

Anyone intending to nominate for election must first complete a free online induction course, provided by DLGSC at http://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/local-government

Nominations close on Thursday 9 September at 4pm.
