The Shire of Ashburton is pleased to announce the official opening of Onslow’s Multi-Purpose facility this Thursday, January 20 at 10am.

The opening will be attended by Minister for Regional Development and Lands Brendon Grylls and Department of Sport and Recreation’s Peter Myers. Media will have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with Minister Grylls and the Shire of Ashburton’s new Chief Executive Jeff Breen about the project.

Pindan Contracting won the tender with Peter Hunt Architects to construct the $10.9 million sporting precinct, one of the major developments undertaken in Onslow as part of the Pilbara Revitalisation Plan through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Program. The State Government provided $7 million in funding towards the project with the Shire of Ashburton contributing over $3 million. Other project funders included Department of Sport and Recreation, Emergency Services Australia, Onslow Salt and the Pilbara Development Commission.

The completion came as an early Christmas present for Onslow residents, following the initial turning of sod by Minister Grylls in February last year.

The new multi-purpose complex includes a full-size sports gymnasium, basketball, indoor soccer, netball, badminton and volleyball courts, as well as a community emergency evacuation centre which can cater for up to 250 people for a period of five days during extreme weather conditions such as cyclones.

The event is expected to run for two hours. Photos are available by contacting 9188 4444.
