2016 Census – Information for Travellers

Published on Tuesday, 26 July 2016 at 12:00:00 AM

The 2016 Census will be held on August 9. It’s a moment for everyone to pause and play a role in shaping the future of Australia. For those travelling during this time, it is worth considering where you will be stopping that night and how you will complete your Census form.

Option 1 - Traveller Stops at Motel or Caravan Park

Paper forms will be provided to all guests staying at motels and caravan parks this Census night. On the front page of the paper form is a 12 digit code which can be used to complete the Census online. Guests can either complete the paper form and return it to motel or caravan park reception, or visit www.census.abs.gov.au to complete their form online.

Option 2 - Traveller Stops at a Popular Rest Stop on Census Night

WA Census staff will attend several pre-identified locations (combination of roadhouses, rest areas, free camping sites) on Census night and travellers can stop in at one of these locations to collect a paper form.  Again, the forms include a 12 digit code on the front page which gives the traveller the option to complete the form online if they prefer. A replied paid envelope will also be provided at these locations.

Option 3 - Traveller Stops Road Side or in Remote Location

If a traveller is not going to be near one of the listed locations (e.g. camping in a remote location or stopping roadside) then we ask that they call the Census Inquiry Service (CIS) on 1300 214 531 and provide their location (eg. I've stopped roadside 60km east of Kalgoorlie). They will then receive a 12-digit code that can be used to complete their Census form online the next time they have internet access.

If you are in an area that doesn't have phone reception, then record your location on Census night and contact the CIS when you do have phone reception.

WA Census field staff will attend the following locations in the Pilbara to provide paper forms on Census night, Tuesday August 9

  • Kumarina Roadhouse & Tavern
  • Capricorn Roadhouse
  • BP Nanutarra
  • Auski Roadhouse
  • Fortescue Roadhouse
  • Peawah Rest Area
  • De Grey River Rest Area
