The Shire of Ashburton celebrated the completion of the $13M Pilbara Regional Waste Management Facility yesterday.

The facility, 40km east of Onslow, was officially opened by Hon. Nola Marino, Assistant Minister for Regional Development; Deanne Renting, Production Manager Wheatstone; and Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White also acknowledged Honorary Bill Johnston, Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Energy; Industrial Relations; and esteemed guests and stakeholder representatives from who attended the opening ceremony and a series of events showcasing future opportunities for Onslow.

“Our 100% off-grid, solar powered, Class 4 facility has been designed and constructed to best practice standards and will accept waste from mining, industrial and oil and gas operations across north west Australia”, said Councillor White.

“The facility is fully integrated, and consists of a Green Waste facility, Construction and Demolition Waste Facility, Liquid Waste Facility, Tyre Mono-cell and Class 4 landfill accepting low level hazardous waste materials.

“I am thrilled to see this project come to fruition and that the only Class IV waste facility outside of Perth will operate not just on a state and national level, but also internationally.

“Our vision is that the facility will service the resource sector globally, taking waste locally and nationally in addition to waste freighted from the northern hemisphere and hydrocarbons like plastic, trawled from the oceans.

“We are in the middle of advertising a business proposal for a commercial operator to operate and provide waste management services for the facility that will be considered at Council meeting in May.

“The Shire is also currently seeking approval to expand the current 445ha Class 4 Facility to an incredible 2500ha Environmentally and Commercially-Orientated (ECO) Industrial Park to meet proposed future commercial and industrial waste demand.

“We see incredible potential for this site with the capacity to create a Centre of Excellence focusing on innovation, environment and technology.

“This facility is part of something very exciting for Onslow, for the Shire, for the North West and beyond”.
